FaustianBargain,

Thanks for the post. I did read the egullet novella last night. Now more than ever I am convinced the CT's PR person is in serious 24 hour therapy! I have to wonder if he knew the level of fall out he was going to face.

As for the agenda, well..it's possible and for us CT lovers I guess that we want it to be that way but I do think that the poor fella' simply stepped knee deep into it. But again I stand by my earlier thought that he's a smart, smart cookie and that he knows PR. So the question is did he do this on purpose? hmm...seems a bit odd if he did but hell maybe he was just pissed and spouted...lord knows we have all done it.

As for your concerns on the "set up" see below for Mark Caro's timeline of events, which I took direct from egullet.

"Here was the sequence: Charlie Trotter spoke to Phil Vettel, and Phil took notes on the conversation and passed them along to me. I spoke to Charlie briefly, confirmed what his position was and made arrangements to interview him more at length the next day. I talked to Grant Achatz and Rick Tramonto about their policies regarding foie gras. Grant said he'll continue to serve it but respected Charlie's decision. Rick was more critical. I talked to Charlie again, and he laid out his position in more detail and offered his much-repeated opinion about Rick. I talked to just about everyone else in the story, including the other chefs listed and some who got cut out of the story, and then went back to Charlie again. No one was being ambushed here, and the conflicts weren't due to misunderstandings; they stemmed from genuine disagreements."

Now what "I spoke to Charlie briefly, confirmed what his position was and made arrangements to interview him more at length the next day." really means, well without the tapes who can know.

As for Bourdain, he's a rabble rouser, it is his nature and he did appoligize for the misinformation which I found to be quite gentlemanly of him, but I will agree that much like the Salem Witch burnings it can be dangerous to fuel the flames on such an emotional issue. He doesn't appear to be the kind of man that runs from an argument so I suspect he'll be back to shake things up once more.
